Dear room 8 families,

Welcome back!! I am so excited about this upcoming school year. My name is Karol Spry and I have the pleasure of being your child's teacher. I am excited about the opportunity to work with your son or daughter. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child.

This year will be both academically challenging and rewarding for your child. We will be focusing on the practices of problem solving, perseverance, communication skills, and working independently. Our 1st grade team is working closely to ensure a strong learning environment and standards-based classroom where your child will feel safe to make mistakes and show a growth mindset.

In the folder your child has brought home the first day of school, there are a few important papers.  Please be sure to take the time to go through them. Please return all paperwork in this folder by Friday. Thank you in advance.

A Rio Seco folder will be sent home as soon as the school gets them.  This Rio Seco folder will be used as a Weekly Communication Folder throughout the year.

I believe that children learn best in an environment where they feel loved, supported, confident, and secure. An essential goal that I have is for everyone to get along and treat each other with RESPECT.

We are partners in your child's education. Therefore, I feel that communication between home and school is very important. I will be sending you a weekly email about what your children are doing in class so you always know what is going on. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. If you need to get a message to me that cannot wait until after school, please call the office at 956-5500 and they will relay the message.

Thank you again,

Karol Spry

Room 8 Information

Students in Room 8 will be expected to show respect toward themselves, others, and for the learning environment. This will be enforced daily in a positive manner. Students will have many opportunities to earn rewards through whole class points, table points, and individual achievements. I want your child to know that they are appreciated when they display good citizenship, character, and decision-making both individually and as a group. Every child has the right to learn in a safe, caring, and comfortable environment. Every teacher has the right to teach in a safe, caring, and comfortable environment.

In Room 8, we will strive to create an environment where students feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged to take ownership of their learning. However, if a student is disruptive or disrespectful, we will use the 5 Step Discipline Plan. The step card for each student will be located in their purple Rio Seco folder. A step will be given to a student for breaking school rules including but not limited to: gum, dress code violations, disruption to learning environment and disrespect.

The 5 steps are:

  1. Verbal warning
  2. Counsel about Behavior Expectations (with teacher) and loss of a privilege (recess or other related, appropriate consequence).
  3. Parent/Teacher Conference (telephone, email or in person)
  4. Refer to VP/Principal
  5. Refer to VP/Principal (in-school or out-of-school suspension)

Steps may be escalated if the behavior is continual or the offense is serious. STEPS can be cleared after five (5) consecutive school days with no further behaviors.

*Some exceptions to this policy include any hands-on offense (fighting), drug or alcohol use and weapon possession. These are zero-tolerance offenses and will be dealt with by administration immediately.
